The chemical industry in the NW of England had established an organisation to promote the region as a leading area for chemical manufacture. The North West Chemical Initiative established several industry sponsored projects one of which was to promote the sharing of resources, equipment and skills between companies in the region.
A project scope to develop the concept was prepared. Although this illustrated areas in which collaboration could take place, more information was needed to understand the views of potential participants, obtain initial “seeds” to start the scheme and also understand the resources needed to manage this on an ongoing basis.
Accordingly a survey was conducted among numerous companies in the region. This showed that although there was considerable interest in collaboration this was best fulfilled by organising networking events. Manufacturing companies could share experiences and service companies raise their profile. This led to the highly successful Chemical Elements series which is now well established in the region.
