Innovation Organisations Supporting Yorkshire & Humber Chemical Companies
Yorkshire and Humber's universities have world class expertise in many areas relevant to the chemical industry and there are several routes of access for businesses. The mission of the Yorkshire Forward Centres of Industrial Collaboration is to deliver research and development services to companies, particularly but not exclusively in the Yorkshire & Humber region. They are based at one or more universities with outstanding research capability. There are ten universities and three higher education institutes in the Yorkshire and Humber Region. They provide training, education and research. The Institute for Chemistry in Industry at Hull University provides training courses and consultancy to businesses of all sizes and also runs a technology club. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (formerly known as the Teaching Company Scheme) is a subsidised scheme to enable a university to provide someone to work at a business exclusively on topics important to that business, thereby transferring knowledge and expertise from universities into companies. Universities in the North East and North West have formed single points of contact for enquiries from businesses seeking expertise. KnoweldgeNorthWest is an initiative by the North West Universities Association to provide access to its extensive resources and expertise. A single enquiry is circulated around the region's sixteen universities, the responses filtered and returned to the originator in five days who can then select the most appropriate. The Knowledge House provides a point of contact for six universities in the north east of England. The team will seek to understand any enquiry, identify appropriate points of assistance and monitor the delivery of services. Various partnerships between universities and industry to develop and promote areas of technology for mutual gain. The Centre for Process Analytics and Control Technology (CPACT) is a multidisciplinary organisation that brings together chemical and process engineers, analytical chemists, control systems engineers and others from academia and industry to develop practical solutions to generic problems in process control. BRITEST is an industry/university partnership identifying best practice in the design of chemical manufacturing processes and manufacturing strategies. These best practices are codified into a suite of tools that members can use. Crystal Faraday is a centre of excellence in green technology. It draws upon the expertise of academia and industry to provide services, information and to stimulate research into greener processes and technologies. IMPACT Faraday connects industry and the science, engineering and technology base in the area of colloids and interfaces to design and develop innovative materials and formulations. This Faraday promotes the adoption of high thropughput technologies that conduct many experiments in parallel to gather data on unprecedented scales thereby dramatically increasing the productivity ot R&D. Pro-Bio was set up to ensure that the benefits of biocatalysis are available to manufacturing industry including chemicals. This includes bio-routes to conventional (i.e. non-bioscience or pharmaceutical chemicals). OMIC is a Manchester based partnership between industry and academia set up to deliver innovation in organic materials and polymers to its members through technology programmes and specialist services. There are 24 Faraday Partnerships in total and information about all of them can be found here. These organisations offer a range of services to assist businesses with innovation. If they are not appropriate then Business Links or bodies under the Networking Organisation category may offer alternative sources of facilitation or brokering. Innovation Relay Centres are an EU sponsored initiative to promote the transfer of technology to and from European companies and research departments. There is a network of offices throughout the EU that can help companies looking for technology or with technology they wish to exploit. Beta Technology deliver the Innovation Relay Centre service in the Y&H region. Yorkshire Forward have appointed experienced senior executives to each of the clusters to promote networking and innovation in the region's business. They also strongly influence Yorkshire Forward's cluster strategies. PHS Consulting provide this service for the chemicals cluster and their representative, Harry Ziman, can be contacted through their website. The Innovation Promoter program is a new initiative aimed at providing businesses with access to a skilled innovation promoter who can spend some time with them to develop and move forward their new ideas. For more information contact the Strategic Cluster Champion or Business Link Knowledge RICH is a searchable database containing information on expertise, facilities and licensing opportunities avaible in the Yorkshire and Humber region. The Centre for Process Innovation is a north east based organisation seeking to exploit new technologies in the commercial arena, particularly functional materials, advanced manufacturing and fuel cells. Various organisations who may be able to assist companies in their search for expertise to drive innovation. Applied Industrial Research Trading Organisations (AIRTO) seeks to encourage technology transfer and exploitation, particularly ensuring that small organisations can access technology. Of particular interest is their membership which amounts to a useful list of sector research organisations. CSL is a government laboratory specialising in sciences for agriculture, food safety and the environment. It offers a range of analytical, consultancy and diagnistic services relevant to the chemical industry. The Royal Society of Chemistry maintains links to consultants and consulting organisations relevant to the chemical industry. REACT is a regional partnership that can assist in many practical ways such as methods to design and manufacture prototypes and also e-business. Source of help for chemical analysis Need help with finding an analytical service or access to equipment? The Knowledge Lab is a single point of contact sponsored by Yorkshire Forward to access the diverse range of analytical techniques available in the region. The Analytical Route Map has been designed with the analytical chemist in mind. Through a series of questions, the Route Map will assist you to define the analytical problem you are grappling with and then it will provide you with a series of possible solutions.
