A company realised that it had the potential to offer a service unique to the UK for the handling of waste, but it needed to examine the concept in a bit more detail.
A preliminary examination of capability showed that they could not expect to compete in the commodity market but their unique capability could lead to the development of a new niche, particularly given trends in European legislation. A specialist survey was therefore commissioned to examine the market in more detail. A visit was also organised to Europe where such capability already existed.
It was found that there were structural differences between the European and UK approaches to handling waste and that the operator’s credentials were critical to premium market sector customers. The company decided that it take a long term view and successfully sought a partner to develop the concept which is continuing to move forward.
